Foundation Scripture: Ephesians 3:14-21

Sunday 30th June 2013

From our foundation scripture, we read Apostle Paul's prayer for the church in Ephesus. He begins by alluding to God as our Father. This suggests that God has a family - He is a family God and He loves the family. We read from the bible, that the family is the oldest institution on earth that God established and blessed. From Genesis 1: 28 we read thus: 'The God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply..."'. In Genesis 12:3, God blesses Abraham and declared that through his family, all the families on earth will be blessed.

To underscore the importance of the family in the New Testament, the first miracle of Jesus was at a wedding in Cana of Galilee. Each of us is a member of a family - and I declare that your family is blessed in Jesus name.

Back to the Old Testament, when God instructed Noah to build an ark in Genesis 7, it was for him and his household in order to preserve the human race. Furthermore, when God was establishing a covenant with Abraham in Genesis 17:7-18, it was also for him and his offspring. God spoke about Abraham in Genesis 18:19 saying 'For I know that he will command his children and his household after him'.

As much as God wants to bless the family, so does the devil wants to attack and destroy homes. All the headlines and  stories on the news these days is all about the family - from the homosexual debate on-going and that of same sex marriage, sexual immorality, child pornography, teenage rebellion and much more - they are all attacks against families, so as to lead to separation, divorce and a breakdown in family life. The ultimate intention of the evil one is to destroy the basic unit that holds society together.

The devil's strategy often involves using family members to disobey God's law in order to bring a plague into the home. From Genesis 12, we read the story of the plagues sent by God to Pharaoh's household, because Sarai, Abram's wife had been illegitimately inducted into Pharaoh's harem (Genesis 12:17).

Similarly, there are homes plagued by the devil because of various atrocities such as  occultism, sexual immorality, violence and wickedness. Another instance is recorded in Genesis 20 of a plague sent by God to Abimelech's household for the same offence. Abraham prayed for Abimelech before he and his household were healed.

I pray that whatever plague the devil may have introduced into your family, by the blood of Jesus Christ I cancel it.

Despite the work of the devil, God has a plan to redeem our households. We can read about this in Exodus 12.3 'Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying 'On the tenth of this month every man shall take for himself a lamb, according to the house of his father, a lamb for a household'.

Just to digress a little bit, when God was giving instructions to Moses with regards to the design of the high priest's garment starting with Aaron, He ordered for certain inclusions - firstly, a shoulder blade holding an onyx stone on which was to be inscribed the names of the twelve tribes of Israel - six on each shoulder. Secondly, on the  twelve different precious stones on the breastplate was to be inscribed the names of the twelve tribes of Israel - It signified that the priest was to carry the names of the tribes on his shoulder and heart before God every time, in order to intercede and mention them by name, so that God's mercies could be extended to the entire nation of Israel.

This duty of the high priest was a foreshadow of what Jesus, our perfect high priest now does for us before God. As Christians, we are called priests in 1 Peter 2:9, and so we can also stand before God and intercede for our family members in order to forestall all plagues, oppression and activities of the devil as God releases his mercies.

Going back to Exodus 12, we read about Israel's preparation as God led them out of slavery in Egypt - He brought them out by the blood of the lamb. He instituted the Passover and gave a lamb for each person. Declare this 'There is a lamb for me'. The devil has no answer for this profound declaration - it is your victory chant against sin, oppression, affliction and all other plagues.

This is what happened on the cross. In 1 Corinthians 5:7 it states thus: 'For Christ our Passover lamb has been sacrificed' (NIV). Our wisdom, philosophies and other human inventions will not defeat the devil - he has been around for a long time and knows every trick of the trade. Our only weapon against him is the blood of the lamb.

On the cross of Calvary, Jesus defeated the devil for our sakes. For us, Jesus was chastised and wounded for our transgressions (Isaiah 53:5). For every curse, Jesus hung on the tree (Galatians 3:13). For our sins, Jesus died to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21). For every work of the evil one, Jesus took our place on the cross.

There is also a lamb for our homes (Exodus 12:3). The home remains the most attacked institution in our world today. From this chapter, God's instruction was that the blood of every lamb killed was to be applied on the doorpost. Each member of  every household was to stay in the house of such a doorpost to prevent being killed.

Now, instead of arguing with your family members, spend that time pleading the blood of Jesus over every attack of the enemy against your household. Remember that, there is a lamb for your house, and you must confess and  declare this regularly (Revelation 12:11).

The devil is working round the clock to reduce our society to one without families. The home unit is being destroyed and this is gradually seeping into the church. So instead of debating over the confusion and bitterness in the home, we must confront this attack with the blood of the lamb. This is the Lord's battle and He will defeat the enemy, if  the battle is handed to him (Zechariah 4:6). He then restores peace, joy, harmony  and wholeness into our homes.

Declare this with me: Whatever the devil is doing in my home, I turn it around by the blood of the lamb. I plead the blood of Jesus upon myself, my home, my family. There is a lamb for my house. Through the lamb, I am more than a conqueror.
